Experts Warn of 'Enormous' Tropical Virus Threat to US
Public health experts are warning that the United States is ill-prepared for the growing threat of tropical and insect-borne viruses. The spread of arboviral threats, such as mosquito- and tick-borne viruses, in non-tropical environments is increasing due to globalization and climate change. The lack of entomologists in the U.S. has hindered the ability to track and monitor these viruses, leading to a lack of information and preparedness. Dengue fever, in particular, is expected to spread into non-tropical regions, including Europe, North America, and southern Africa. Experts suggest that the U.S. should learn from countries like Singapore in implementing active surveillance programs and public awareness campaigns to control mosquito populations and prevent outbreaks.
