CDC Warns of Rare Diseases Spread by Pet Dogs

The CDC has reported that pet dogs in New Jersey and Wisconsin have been linked to two rare diseases. In New Jersey, two dogs were infected with antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, similar to a strain that caused a human outbreak linked to artificial tears. In Wisconsin, a fungal outbreak of Blastomyces affected both humans and dogs, with spores likely inhaled from disturbed soil. While direct transmission from dogs to humans is rare, the environments where dogs are exposed may also pose risks to humans.

Contaminated Eye Drops Linked to Multiple Deaths and Vision Loss

The death toll linked to contaminated eye drops has risen to three, with at least eight people going blind and four having their eyeballs surgically removed. The eye drops were contaminated with an antibiotic-resistant form of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an aggressive bacterium. More than 10 different brands of artificial tears have been recalled, with most cases linked to EzriCare and Delsam Pharma eye drops made by India-based Global Pharma Healthcare. The CDC has warned anyone with symptoms of an eye infection who used these eye drops to seek medical care immediately.

Eye Drop Recalls Linked to Blindness and Injuries in US

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported that 68 patients in 16 US states have been diagnosed with a rare bacterial infection likely caused by preservative-free eyedrops, resulting in the death of one American and vision loss in eight others. Four people infected have been forced to have their eyes surgically removed, including Florida grandmother Clara Oliva, who is now suing the makers of EzriCare Artificial Tears. The product has been linked to the outbreak of a rare bacterial infection, but the company has stated that testing has not definitively linked the outbreak of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to their products.
