Scientists Uncover a New Twist on the Anomalous Hall Effect in Non-Magnetic Materials

Researchers in Japan have discovered a giant anomalous Hall effect in a nonmagnetic Dirac semimetal, Cd3As2, by applying an in-plane magnetic field, revealing that the effect originates from orbital magnetization rather than electron spin, challenging long-standing physics assumptions and opening new avenues for electronic device development.

"Unveiling the New Hall Effect: Expanding the Frontiers of Physics"

Scientists have discovered an anisotropic anomalous Hall effect in a spinel oxide thin film, which varies with current direction and is explained by a new model involving a magnetic toroidal quadrupole structure, aligning with Onsager’s theorem. This phenomenon contradicts Onsager’s reciprocal theorem and has not been observed before. The study proposes a physical model that successfully accounts for the coexistence of the magnetic toroidal quadrupole and ferromagnetism owing to conical magnetic anisotropy, pushing the boundaries of traditional physics.

Quantum Effect Achieved Without Edges in Experiments

Physicists at RIKEN have demonstrated Laughlin charge pumping in a quantum anomalous Hall insulator using a disk-shaped device without edge channels connecting the two electrodes, overturning the assumption that electronic states in these edges were crucial for supporting the quantum anomalous Hall insulator. This opens the way for realizing other novel electronic behavior in quantum anomalous Hall materials.
