"Scientists Discover Mysterious State Between Liquid and Solid"
Scientists from the University of California, Berkeley have discovered a hidden state between liquid and solid known as amorphous solids. These materials have a disordered arrangement similar to liquids but also exhibit some solid-like behavior. Using computation and simulation, the researchers found that at the temperature boundary of supercooled liquids and solids, particles remain excited and "twitch" in place. This behavior, known as excitations, causes the material to lose its rigidity and behave as a normal liquid. The study provides insights into the complex nature of amorphous solids and could pave the way for future experimental work in understanding their dynamics.
