West Nile virus spreads in Pittsburgh-area mosquitoes
Mosquitoes collected from various areas in Pittsburgh, including Beltzhoover and South Side Slopes neighborhoods, have tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD). West Nile virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the United States, with symptoms including fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. The ACHD advises residents to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites to reduce the risk of mosquito bites. The department will continue surveillance efforts and urges residents to report mosquito breeding sites.
