Aliro 1.0 Debuts as Apple-Backed Cross-Device Smart Lock Standard

The Connectivity Standards Alliance released Aliro 1.0, a new smart lock standard designed for seamless interoperability among mobile devices, wearables, and access readers without a dedicated app. Backed by Apple, Google, Samsung and major lockmakers, Aliro supports NFC, Bluetooth LE, and UWB, uses asymmetric cryptography for secure interactions, and lets Aliro-enabled locks be added to wallet apps on iPhone and Android. It targets homes and enterprise spaces like offices, universities, and hotels, with initial certifications anticipated for leading manufacturers and plans for future features such as secure key sharing.

Aliro launches as the universal phone key for smart locks

Aliro, the new 1.0 smart‑lock standard, lets any smartphone unlock any compatible lock via a digital key stored in the phone’s wallet, with cross‑platform tap‑to‑unlock (NFC) and hands‑free unlocking (UWB). It’s backed by Apple, Google, Samsung and the CSA, and will require an administrative infrastructure (Matter) and new hardware for broad deployment. While some existing locks may receive OTA updates, many manufacturers say backward compatibility isn’t guaranteed, meaning widespread adoption will hinge on new devices and platform support rather than upgrades to current locks.

Aliro revolutionizes smart lock access with smartphones and smartwatches

Apple, Google, Samsung, and other major tech companies have joined forces with lock makers and chip makers to develop Aliro, an open standard for smart locks and digital keys. The goal is to create a global communication protocol and common credentialing system that allows any authorized smartphone or smartwatch to open any smart lock, regardless of the manufacturer. Aliro, which is being developed by over 200 companies, aims to simplify access points and eliminate the need for proprietary apps or specific devices. While still in the concept stage, Aliro is expected to release its first specification in early 2025.
