"Global Cybersecurity Standards and Certifications for Smart Home Devices Launched by CSA and FCC"

The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has introduced a new IoT Device Security Specification program, aiming to provide a globally recognized security certification for consumer IoT devices. The program, which includes requirements such as unique device identity and secure software updates, will offer a Product Security Verified (PSV) Mark to compliant devices. This initiative, supported by major companies like Google, Amazon, and Philips Hue, seeks to simplify the certification process for manufacturers and provide consumers with easily identifiable indicators of a product's security. While the program focuses on device security rather than privacy, it represents a significant step forward in addressing IoT device security concerns, with plans for ongoing updates and incident response requirements.

Aliro revolutionizes smart lock access with smartphones and smartwatches

Apple, Google, Samsung, and other major tech companies have joined forces with lock makers and chip makers to develop Aliro, an open standard for smart locks and digital keys. The goal is to create a global communication protocol and common credentialing system that allows any authorized smartphone or smartwatch to open any smart lock, regardless of the manufacturer. Aliro, which is being developed by over 200 companies, aims to simplify access points and eliminate the need for proprietary apps or specific devices. While still in the concept stage, Aliro is expected to release its first specification in early 2025.

Matter 1.2 Update Enhances Device Compatibility and Performance

The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has released an updated Matter 1.2 specification, which adds support for new device types and brings performance improvements to the smart home protocol. Matter 1.2 enables the integration of devices such as refrigerators, air conditioners, dishwashers, and more into the smart home ecosystem. Apple's HomeKit already supports some of these device types but may need updates to add Matter 1.2 support. The update also includes enhancements for multi-unit switches, multi-light fixtures, semantic tags, and device operational states, providing device makers with more options for complex smart home products. Matter 1.2 certification is now open, and devices with these improvements are expected to be available later this year.
