"Understanding Commotio Cordis: Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Athletes"

Commotio cordis is a rare but serious medical condition that can cause sudden cardiac arrest after a blunt impact to the chest during a narrow window in the heart rhythm. It is most common in young male athletes and is often caused by baseballs, softballs, lacrosse balls, hockey pucks, or physical contact from other athletes. Immediate emergency response, including CPR and the use of an AED, can increase survival rates. Prevention measures include learning the signs of commotio cordis, keeping an AED on hand, training in CPR, and adapting athletic activities to avoid hard blows to the chest.
