Mortgage rates have declined for the third consecutive week, with the average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage dropping to 6.87% and the 15-year fixed mortgage rate decreasing to 6.13%, according to Freddie Mac's latest survey.
The US 30-year mortgage rate has dropped below 7% for the first time in a month, leading to an increase in applications for home purchases. The contract rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage decreased by 18 basis points to 6.84% in the week ended March 8, according to Mortgage Bankers Association data.
