Uganda passes stricter anti-gay legislation.
Ugandan lawmakers have passed a new version of an anti-gay bill that removes a clause criminalizing identifying as LGBTQ, but still allows prison sentences of up to 20 years for advocating or promoting LGBTQ rights. The legislation prescribes the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality” and life imprisonment for sexual activity “against the order of nature.” President Museveni can sign or veto the bill, but is under pressure from the international community to veto it. The Church of England's decision to continue banning church weddings for same-sex couples has angered many in Uganda and elsewhere in Africa, where homosexuality is criminalized in more than 30 countries.
