Massive anti-government protests sweep across Africa.

South African security forces have arrested 87 people over public violence before planned protests by the left-wing Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party, which has called for a national shutdown to protest crippling power cuts and demand the resignation of President Cyril Ramaphosa. The party draws heavy support among poor and working-class Black South Africans who feel left out of the country’s prosperity since the governing African National Congress (ANC) ended white minority rule in 1994. Authorities said there would be a heavy police presence to deal with any possible violence.
