A boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Tunisia, leaving 41 people dead, according to four survivors who were rescued. The survivors reported leaving Sfax, Tunisia, on August 3 and were rescued by a commercial tanker after their boat overturned in rough seas. The International Organization for Migration stated that this shipwreck brings the total number of people dead or missing in the central Mediterranean to over 1,800. Recent departures from Tunisia may have been fueled by a crackdown on Black migrants, with Tunisian authorities rounding up sub-Saharan migrants and pushing them into deserted border areas. Calls have been made for Europe to develop safe and legal pathways for migration to prevent future tragedies.
