Mali terminates UN peacekeeping mission, boosting Wagner's influence

The UN Security Council has unanimously voted to terminate the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) and transfer security responsibilities to Mali's transitional government. The mission will begin drawing down its presence on Saturday and completely withdraw from Mali by January 1, 2024. The UN Secretary-General called for the transitional government's cooperation in ensuring an orderly and safe withdrawal. However, concerns have been raised about the reduced financial commitment for the drawdown process. The withdrawal comes amid a fragile security situation in the Sahel region, and some Council members have expressed the need to address the presence of armed actors. Mali's government has pledged full support and will work to protect civilians across the country.
