Japan Condemns 'Unacceptable' Verdict in 'Comfort Women' Lawsuit

Japan has been ordered by a South Korean court to compensate the surviving families of "comfort women," who were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military during World War II. The court overturned a previous ruling based on sovereign immunity, stating that there is a common international law that does not recognize immunity for illegal acts. Japan, which claims the issue was settled under a 1965 treaty, criticized the ruling as "extremely regrettable and absolutely unacceptable."
