China's Foxconn Probe Sends Warning to Taiwan Firms

The Chinese government has called on Taiwanese companies to play a "positive role" in promoting peaceful relations across the Taiwan Strait, amidst an investigation into major Apple supplier Foxconn. The probe has been criticized by Taiwan's Vice President Lai Ching-te as an example of Chinese election interference and pressure on Taiwanese corporations. China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson, Zhu Fenglian, did not confirm the investigation but stated that relevant mainland departments treat all enterprises equally and carry out law-abiding investigations. Zhu emphasized that China's policy towards Taiwan will not change and that the government will continue to support Taiwanese businesses. However, she also signaled that China expects these companies to assume social responsibilities and contribute to the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations.
