Trans women share harrowing accounts of abuse under Argentina dictatorship.

Transgender women in Argentina have testified about rape, torture, and sexual abuse they suffered during the military dictatorship from 1976 to 1983. The trans community was particularly targeted and suffered even after the return of democracy. However, Argentina has been making progress in recognizing the trans community's rights, including a landmark gender-identity law and a law reserving 1% of public sector jobs for trans individuals. The recent trial of former security officers on charges of crimes against humanity includes testimony from five transgender women who were held in a detention center. The sentences in the case are expected by the end of the year.
