UN Successfully Transfers All Oil from Deteriorating Yemeni Tanker

The United Nations has announced that over a million barrels of oil have been successfully transferred from an aging tanker, known as SOF Safer, moored off the coast of war-torn Yemen, averting a potential environmental disaster. The operation, which began on July 25, involved siphoning the oil onto a replacement tanker called Nautica. The Safer had carried four times the amount of oil spilled in the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster. The dilapidated vessel had been a cause for concern due to the risk of a spill or explosion. The transfer marks a significant milestone, but additional funding is needed to transport the oil and move the SOF Safer. The United States has called on other countries to contribute to complete the job and address remaining environmental threats.
