Zimbabwe's Mnangagwa Declared Winner in Controversial Election

Incumbent Emmerson Mnangagwa of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (Zanu PF) has been declared the winner of the country's general elections, securing 52 percent of the vote. Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa, who heads the Citizens Coalition for Change, received 44 percent. Many Zimbabweans fear that Mnangagwa's victory will mean a continuation of the economic crisis caused by years of mismanagement by Zanu PF, with 90 percent of the population relying on informal work and the currency depreciating against the US dollar. The country's economy is burdened by debt and requires macro-economic reforms, infrastructure improvements, and institutional reforms of state-run companies.
