Rapid Spread of JN.1 COVID Variant Raises Concerns

The JN.1 variant, a heavily mutated strain of COVID-19, is currently the fastest-growing variant in the United States, accounting for over one-fifth of all infections. It is closely related to the BA.2.86 strain and has one additional mutation in its spike protein. While it is still unclear if JN.1 causes different symptoms, its symptoms appear to be similar to other variants. JN.1 may be more transmissible and better at evading the immune system, but it does not pose an increased public health risk compared to other variants.
