Mysterious Dog Illness Spreads, Veterinarians Issue Warnings

A local veterinarian in the Tri-Cities area believes that a new respiratory illness affecting dogs has reached the region, causing persistent coughing that can last for weeks. While there is no official confirmation of cases in Tennessee, the illness has been confirmed in 14 other states. The cause of the illness is still unknown, and tests for common respiratory viruses or infections have come up negative. The illness appears to affect larger dog breeds more severely and can progress to pneumonia. It is highly contagious, and precautions such as avoiding boarding, dog parks, and grooming are recommended. Researchers are currently studying the illness to develop a diagnosis, treatment, or vaccine, but this process may take years.
