A bright meteor, likely a fireball, streaked across the skies from the D.C. area to New York state, delighting skywatchers and garnering dozens of eyewitness reports. The celestial spectacle was visible from Virginia to New York and even parts of eastern Canada, with the greatest concentration of reports originating from Northern Virginia and central Maryland. The American Meteor Society received over 150 reports and its trajectory algorithm suggests the meteor traveled from southwest to northeast through western Pennsylvania before disintegrating in the atmosphere. This event is not uncommon, as several thousand meteors of fireball magnitude occur in the Earth’s atmosphere each day, with many going unnoticed over oceans and uninhabited regions.
