Unveiling the Enigmatic Quantum Vortex Phenomena in Superconductors

Researchers from KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stanford University have discovered a new type of quantum vortex in superconductors that can contain fractional quantum flux, contrary to previous theories. This breakthrough finding challenges our understanding of electronic flow in superconductors and opens up potential applications in superconducting electronics and computing. The researchers used a Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) to observe and manipulate these fractional quantum vortices, suggesting their potential use as information carriers in superconducting computers.
