Scientists have created a new material called StarCrete, made from extra-terrestrial dust, potato starch, and a pinch of salt, which is twice as strong as ordinary concrete and could be used to build homes on Mars. StarCrete offers a possible solution to the prohibitively expensive and difficult task of building infrastructure in space. The material can be made in an ordinary oven or microwave at normal ‘home baking’ temperatures, offering reduced energy costs for production. If used on earth, StarCrete could offer a greener alternative to traditional concrete.
