Karol Bobko, Pioneer Challenger Pilot, Passes Away at 85

Karol Bobko, an Air Force pilot and astronaut, has passed away at the age of 85. He piloted the first voyage of the space shuttle Challenger in 1983, nearly three years before it tragically exploded. Bobko also commanded two other shuttle missions and was the first New York City native to orbit the Earth. He joined NASA in 1969 after a Defense Department project exploring military uses of space was canceled. Throughout his career, Bobko made significant contributions to the space program and was highly respected by his colleagues.
