Hawaiian Surfer Survives Tiger Shark Attack with Positive Attitude

A 40-year veteran surfer from Hawaii, Mike Morita, lost his right foot after being attacked by a tiger shark while surfing near Kewalo Basin. Morita was able to escape the shark's grip by hitting its gills and was rescued by friends who tied a tourniquet and towed him back to shore. Shark attacks are rare, with only 57 unprovoked bites reported globally in 2022, and the global population of sharks and rays has declined 71% in the last 50 years.
