Male golden rocket frogs in Guyana's Kaieteur Falls fiercely defend bromeliads within their territory, which serve as both shelter and nursery for their offspring. A new study reveals that the frogs choose bromeliads with the nicest pools, where tadpoles are more likely to thrive. Researchers measured the quality of each pool by analyzing factors such as volume, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and the presence of strange mucilage. The study also found that male frogs transport larger, more adult tadpoles on their backs, suggesting they may monitor their offspring for extended periods and relocate them if necessary.
