A tropical system is forming in the Gulf of Mexico on the first day of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, with a 70% chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm within the next two days. If it becomes a named storm, it would be called Tropical Storm Arlene. Regardless of development, heavy rainfall and flooding are possible across much of Florida through the weekend. Top forecasters from Colorado State University slightly increased their forecast for the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, predicting 15 named storms and seven hurricanes.
