Growing Number of Women Join Texas Abortion Lawsuit

Seven women, including Kimberly Manzano and Danielle Mathisen, have joined an ongoing lawsuit challenging Texas' abortion laws, bringing the total number of plaintiffs to 22. The lawsuit, filed by the Center for Reproductive Rights, argues that Texas' near-total ban on abortion violates their rights under the state's constitution. The plaintiffs allege they were denied abortion care for their medically complex pregnancies, including cases where the fetus was not expected to survive after birth. The lawsuit comes after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, leading to the closure of abortion clinics across Texas. A temporary injunction granted in July protected doctors who terminate complicated pregnancies, but the ruling is on hold pending a hearing by the Texas Supreme Court.
