China scrambled fighter jets to monitor a US Navy P-8A Poseidon that flew over the Taiwan Strait in international airspace on Friday. The US Navy stated that the flight demonstrated the US's commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. China's Eastern Theater Command called the flight "provocative" and accused the US of being a disruptor of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Tensions between the US and China have increased since Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen visited House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California at the beginning of April.
