President Joe Biden has nominated Dr. Monica Bertagnolli, a world-renowned surgical oncologist and cancer researcher, to serve as the next director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Bertagnolli has been serving as the director of the National Cancer Institute since October 2022, where she has advanced the Cancer Moonshot effort to end cancer. She is set to take over from Lawrence Tabak, who has been serving as the acting director of the NIH since December 2021. The position of NIH director requires Senate confirmation.
