The Biden Administration has committed to phasing out coal power plants nationwide and not building new ones as part of its green agenda. U.S. Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry announced at the United Nations climate change summit that the U.S. is joining the Power Past Coal Alliance, a group of 56 nations working to accelerate the phase-out of unabated coal. While the timeline for shutting down existing U.S. coal plants is unclear, other regulatory actions and international commitments have targeted 2035 as a coal-free deadline. As of October, coal accounted for roughly 20% of U.S. electricity generation, down from over 50% in 2008.
