ADHD Medication Use Linked to Increased Heart Risk

A nested case-control study from Sweden found that longer use of ADHD medication was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, particularly hypertension and arterial disease. The risk peaked at 3 to 5 years of use. Clinicians are advised to regularly monitor cardiovascular signs and symptoms during ADHD medication treatment. The study also highlighted the need for larger studies to replicate the results and emphasized the importance of individualized clinical decision-making when considering the long-term effects of ADHD medications.
