Huawei's Chinese-made surveillance chips pose threat to Apple and raise concerns in Washington

Huawei's HiSilicon chip design unit has been shipping Chinese-made chips for surveillance cameras, indicating that the company is finding ways to bypass U.S. export controls. The shipments started this year and some customers are believed to be Chinese. This development suggests that Huawei is overcoming the restrictions imposed by the U.S. since 2019, which prevented it from obtaining components and technology from American firms without approval. HiSilicon, which mainly supplies chips for Huawei equipment, aims to regain market share in the surveillance camera sector. Huawei's recent smartphone releases also feature advanced chips, likely domestically made, indicating a comeback for its smartphone business.
