Salmonella Outbreak: 16 Sickened in Ground Beef Connection

A salmonella outbreak linked to lean ground beef sold at ShopRite stores in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York has sickened 16 people, including six who were hospitalized. The source of the ground beef is still being investigated, and one additional case of salmonella illness has been reported in Massachusetts. While ground beef is still available at ShopRite, no recall has been recommended by the U.S. Agriculture Department. Salmonella can be spread through contaminated water, food, and preparation surfaces, and it is important to cook ground beef thoroughly to kill the bacteria.
