An independent lab has found high levels of benzene, a cancer-causing chemical, in popular benzoyl peroxide acne treatment products, including brands like Clearasil, Proactiv, and Clinique. The lab's tests suggest that this issue applies broadly to benzoyl peroxide products on the market, with benzene forming at levels hundreds of times the FDA limit. Benzene was not only detected inside the products but also in the air outside the packages, posing an inhalation risk. The lab has petitioned the FDA for an investigation and market withdrawal of these products, while companies like Reckitt, which owns Clearasil, assert that their products are safe when used and stored as directed.
