Tennessee company resists US demand for 67 million airbag inflator recall

ARC Automotive, a Tennessee-based company, has refused a request from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to recall 67 million potentially dangerous airbag inflators in the US. The NHTSA has demanded the recall after concluding that the inflators could explode and hurl shrapnel, causing injury or death. ARC has responded that no defect exists in the inflators and that any problems are related to isolated manufacturing issues. The NHTSA may now schedule a public hearing and take the company to court to force a recall.
