NYC's 'City of Yes' Housing Plan Advances with Key Council Approval

The New York City Council committees have approved Mayor Eric Adams' 'City of Yes' zoning proposal, aimed at accelerating housing construction to address the city's housing crisis. Despite some concessions that may reduce the number of new housing units, the plan is seen as a significant step forward. It includes changes to zoning codes to promote development near transit stations and allow more flexible use of residential spaces. The proposal, which could add up to 80,000 housing units over 15 years, now awaits a full Council vote.

Berkeley's Zoning Code Rewrite to Boost Student Housing Availability

The city of Berkeley is considering raising the height limit for buildings in the Southside neighborhood to 12 stories in an effort to address the student housing crunch. The proposed zoning changes would allow developers to construct taller apartment buildings along Telegraph Avenue and surrounding blocks. Supporters argue that increasing housing options near the campus will alleviate pressure on the rental market and prevent students from competing with long-time residents for apartments elsewhere in the city. The changes are part of a larger effort by the Berkeley Planning Commission to rewrite zoning rules and encourage more construction throughout the city.

Albuquerque City Council Approves Zoning Changes for Casitas and Downtown Street Project.

Albuquerque City Council has approved zoning changes that will allow the building of "accessory dwelling units," or casitas, in most residential-zoned areas. The new laws will help multigenerational families stay together and add more units to the housing stock. Casitas will be limited to 750 square feet and require off-street parking. Homeowners can still build casitas for the purpose of renting them out, as long as they follow the rules written in the short-term rental ordinance.
