The Woodbury Fire Department in Minnesota has attributed five recent house fires to lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly found in consumer electronics. The fires were caused by overheating batteries in devices such as a lawnmower, power drill, and airsoft gun, resulting in significant property damage. Fire officials advise consumers to read labels, stop charging batteries once full, use designated batteries and charging equipment, and charge devices on hard surfaces to minimize the risk of fires. The risk extends beyond the home, as travelers are urged to check airline and TSA rules for packing devices with lithium-ion batteries.
