Massive Bird Mortality in Chicago: 1,000 Migrating Birds Collide with Building
Nearly 1,000 migrating birds died after colliding with the windows of the McCormick Place Lakeside Center in Chicago during the fall migration season. The Field Museum reported the highest number of bird deaths in the four decades they have been monitoring the area, with volunteers and scientists finding 961 dead birds outside the convention center. The incident highlights the ongoing issue of bird-window collisions, which result in millions of bird deaths each year in the United States. Conservationists are urging building owners to turn off lights and use less reflective or opaque windows to protect migrating birds.
