Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman on the Supreme Court, will be honored at a funeral service at Washington National Cathedral. President Biden and Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. are among those scheduled to give eulogies. Justice O'Connor, who served on the court for 24 years, was known for her influential role and commitment to collegiality. She passed away at the age of 93 from complications of dementia.
The Washington National Cathedral has unveiled new stained-glass windows titled "Now and Forever," created by artist Kerry James Marshall, which replace previous windows honoring Confederate Gens. Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. The new windows depict a group of protesters advocating for racial justice. The cathedral's dean stated that the previous windows were offensive and antithetical to the cathedral's mission. The Confederate tribute windows were removed in 2017, and the cathedral selected Marshall to create the racial justice-themed windows. The unveiling also included a poem by Elizabeth Alexander titled "American Song."
