"Trump and Johnson Unite on Election Integrity Amid Surveillance Bill Passage"

Former President Donald Trump expressed support for House Speaker Mike Johnson amid discontent from conservatives, as the two unveiled voting legislation at Mar-a-Lago. Johnson, facing a potential removal, has been at odds with the far-right wing of the GOP. Trump's backing comes as he prepares for a criminal trial and seeks to neutralize the abortion issue. The meeting aimed to promote a bill on election integrity, drawing criticism from Democrats. While Trump's endorsement may ease pressure on Johnson, challenges remain as the GOP grapples with internal divisions and policy decisions.

GOP Introduces Election Integrity Legislation

House Republicans have introduced the American Confidence in Elections (ACE) Act, a voting legislation aimed at enhancing election security. The bill, which includes provisions such as mandating access to voter data, requiring citizenship status on identification documents, and reducing grants for states allowing noncitizens to vote, is seen by Democrats as rooted in former President Donald Trump's election denial. Critics argue that the bill would make it harder to vote and disproportionately disenfranchise people of color. While the GOP legislation is unlikely to pass in the Democratic-controlled Senate, Democrats have also struggled to pass their own voting rights legislation.
