George Baker Jr., a healthy and active volunteer firefighter and outdoorsman from Central New York, died at age 79 from eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), a rare and deadly mosquito-borne virus with no cure, marking the first EEE-related death in the region in 10 years.
A volunteer firefighter in Salem, Connecticut, was struck and killed by a driver on Sunday night. The incident occurred at an intersection with no auxiliary lighting or marked crosswalks. The firefighter, 69-year-old Willis Sands, was pronounced dead at the scene. The occupants of the minivan involved in the accident were unharmed. The murder trial of former Prince George's County firefighter Daniel Greene, accused of killing Baltimore County volunteer firefighter John Hickey in November 2017, continued with testimony from Greene's estranged wife, who claimed he lived a double life with a girlfriend on the side.
