Persistent Infectiousness in Children: Study Finds 40% Remain Contagious Post-Symptom Resolution

A study conducted in Toronto during the Omicron surge found that 40% of children with COVID-19 were still infectious on the day after their symptoms resolved. The study also revealed that rapid antigen tests (RATs) were often negative early in the course of illness and cannot be relied upon to exclude infection. The findings suggest the need for infection prevention and control interventions for up to 10 days post-symptom onset to reduce transmission risk, especially around vulnerable or immunocompromised populations.

COVID-19 Study Supports 3-Day School Isolation Policy for Kids

Children infected with COVID-19, regardless of vaccination status, were found to be contagious for a median of 3 days, supporting the effectiveness of 5-day school isolation policies amid the predominance of the Omicron variant. The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Southern California and Stanford University, included 76 children aged 7 to 18 years. The findings suggest that shorter isolation durations may be sufficient to protect other students while minimizing educational disruptions for infected children. Future research is needed to adapt school COVID-19 isolation policies to potential changes in viral infectivity.
