Persistent Infectiousness in Children: Study Finds 40% Remain Contagious Post-Symptom Resolution
A study conducted in Toronto during the Omicron surge found that 40% of children with COVID-19 were still infectious on the day after their symptoms resolved. The study also revealed that rapid antigen tests (RATs) were often negative early in the course of illness and cannot be relied upon to exclude infection. The findings suggest the need for infection prevention and control interventions for up to 10 days post-symptom onset to reduce transmission risk, especially around vulnerable or immunocompromised populations.
