Historically Black College to Train Diverse Veterinarians

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore aims to establish the second historically Black college veterinary school in the U.S. by 2026, addressing the lack of diversity in the veterinary profession and the growing need for veterinarians. With only 3% of the workforce being Black, UMES hopes to open doors and create opportunities in an underserved field, aiming to attract diverse students from nearby urban areas. The increase in pet ownership during the pandemic has highlighted the need for more veterinarians, and UMES plans to offer an accelerated three-year program to help address the overall vet shortage nationally.

Penn's Veterinary School Funding Blocked by Republicans Over Antisemitism Controversy

Republicans in Pennsylvania's House of Representatives voted to withhold over $30 million in funding from the University of Pennsylvania's veterinary school due to concerns over the school's response to antisemitism on campus. The decision comes after the university's president, M. Elizabeth Magill, resigned following a congressional hearing where she appeared to evade questions about punishing students who called for the genocide of Jews. The funding, which represents about 18% of the school's budget, was already approved by the State Senate and supported by House Democrats, but failed to secure the required two-thirds majority. The school expressed disappointment and hopes for reconsideration in 2024.
