Historically Black College to Train Diverse Veterinarians

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore aims to establish the second historically Black college veterinary school in the U.S. by 2026, addressing the lack of diversity in the veterinary profession and the growing need for veterinarians. With only 3% of the workforce being Black, UMES hopes to open doors and create opportunities in an underserved field, aiming to attract diverse students from nearby urban areas. The increase in pet ownership during the pandemic has highlighted the need for more veterinarians, and UMES plans to offer an accelerated three-year program to help address the overall vet shortage nationally.
