The U.S. military has conducted three more strikes on alleged drug-carrying boats in the Eastern Pacific, killing eight people, amid ongoing controversy over the legality and ethics of the campaign against drug cartels, which has resulted in at least 95 deaths across 25 vessels since September.
Two humpback whales were found dead off the coasts of New York and New Jersey, with one suspected to have died due to blunt force trauma and the other due to a vessel strike. Humpback whale deaths on the East Coast have been on the rise since 2016, with 40% of whales that underwent necropsies showing evidence of human interaction. The species is still protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act in the US, but vessel strikes and entanglement in fishing gear continue to pose serious threats.
