"Oregon Coast Designated for Floating Offshore Wind Farms by Federal Government"
The federal government has designated two areas off the Oregon coast for floating offshore wind farms, with the potential to produce 2.4 gigawatts of energy, enough for 800,000 homes. Governor Tina Kotek sees offshore wind as crucial for meeting the state's renewable energy goals and economic development. However, the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians expressed disappointment, stating that areas of cultural significance were identified for offshore wind without adequate consultation. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will conduct an environmental assessment and public comment periods before moving forward with lease sales in the designated areas.
