"Mexico's Controversial Maya Train: Inauguration, Delays, and Tourism Impact"

Mexico is set to inaugurate the first phase of the Tren Maya, a tourist train project touted as President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's flagship infrastructure project. However, experts warn that the train is far from being fully operational, with doubts cast on the timeline for completion. Originally projected at $7.5 billion, the project's cost has ballooned to over $28 billion. Four additional Tren Maya cars have arrived in Cancun, just days before the official inauguration of the project. The cars, escorted by the National Guard, made the journey from Ciudad Sahagún, Hidalgo, and were seen pulling into the Cancun Maya Train maintenance garage. With these new arrivals, there are now a total of 24 standard model cars in Cancun, each with a capacity of 230 passengers. The official inauguration from Campeche to Cancun is scheduled for December 15, and the Cancun to Palenque section is set to begin operations on December 31. The entire Tren Maya project is expected to be completed by the end of February 2024.
