"Revolutionary Brain Implant Reads Deep Neural Activity"
Researchers at UC San Diego have developed a transparent, flexible neural implant with a dense array of graphene electrodes that can capture high-resolution information about deep neural activity while sitting on the brain's surface. The implant overcomes the limitations of current technologies by enabling the prediction of deep neural activity from surface signals, allowing for longer duration experiments and a more comprehensive understanding of neural activity in real-world scenarios. The technology's transparency and high electrode density, combined with machine learning methods, make it possible to simultaneously record electrical signals and optically image neural activity, providing a clear field of view for imaging experiments. The team aims to test the technology in different animal models with the goal of human translation in the future.
