Transphobic Narrative Rejected After Nashville Shooting

The Trans Radical Activist Network (TRAN) is going ahead with its "Trans Day of Vengeance" rally in Washington D.C. on April 1, despite recent criticism and accusations of radicalization following the school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee. The rally aims to protest against bills in numerous states limiting gender-affirming health care. The organizers of the rally have rejected any connection between their event and the mass shooting, which police have said was perpetrated by a transgender individual. The rally comes amid a wave of proposed legislation seeking to limit access to medical treatment for transgender individuals.

Twitter Censors Discussion of 'Trans Day of Vengeance' Protest.

Twitter removed over 5,000 tweets and retweets of a poster promoting a “trans day of vengeance” protest in support of transgender rights in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, citing incitement of violence. The removal of tweets angered conservative Twitter users who said the rules were unfairly applied to them because they were posting the image of the protest flyer to speak out against it. However, trans activists pointed out that “trans day of vengeance” is a meme that has been around in the trans community for years and is not a call to violence. Twitter used automated processes to remove tweets quickly at a large scale, without considering the context in which the tweets were shared.

The Nashville School Shooting and the Politics of Identity.

Twitter has temporarily restricted Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's congressional account after she tweeted a graphic that referred to a "Trans Day of Vengeance" following the school shooting in Nashville. Greene's tweet seems to have been about a demonstration organized for Saturday in front of the Supreme Court. The Trans Radical Activist Network, Our Rights DC and other groups are putting together the event to protest the anti-trans legislation and violence that transgender people in the U.S. continue to face. Twitter's trust and safety head, Ella Irwin, said it had to "sweep" the platform to remove more than 5,000 tweets and retweets of the graphic.

The Dangerous Intersection of Transphobia and Violence.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's congressional Twitter account was suspended for seven days for violating Twitter's rules on "violent speech" after sharing an image of a poster promoting an April 1 protest organized by a group called Our Rights DC that seeks to "Stop Trans Genocide." Greene's personal Twitter account remains active. The suspension comes after a transgender former student killed six people in Nashville, and Greene suggested hormone therapy could be to blame for the shooting. Greene's personal Twitter account was permanently suspended in January 2022 for repeatedly violating the company's policies on posting misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic.
